I do not think it has been stated enough just how hard a time Dee and Brian have had over the last 10 days. In the middle of last night they rendezvoused with a rib from Rodney Bay Marina in St Lucia. Shortly afterwards they were able to fully charge the batteries and know that they could race on to Costa Rica.

Head south until the butter melts

Now is the time of year that the early boats will be leaving Europe and heading for the Caribbean. The traditional route has been described as ‘head south until the butter melts and then turn right'. The idea is that you make your way south until you reach the trade winds that blow from the African Coast to the Caribbean, then you are in warm, steady, downwind conditions.

What a week!

Well that was a pretty tough first week for what should be a "walk in the park" race, compared to last year's Vendee Globe. I would imagine most of the guys last week would have got off the boats many times if they could and that is saying something given the level of experience out there. We've heard about unprecedented levels of damage across the fleet, and unusually most boats have ‘fessed up to some problem or other.

Loss of wind instruments are undoubtedly a pain in the proverbial

Last night Dee and Brian were racing in over 40 knots of wind and big Atlantic swell. Just before dusk one of the two wind instruments at the top of the mast was literally flicked off with the force of movement.

As Tuesday night passes through into Wednesday morning the Transat Jaques Vabre fleet will be bracing themselves for a full winter gale. At around dawn they will expect to have the cold front pass over the top of them. This front precedes the low pressure system.
